  • Job Description
    The Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) Journeyman performs a full range of maintenance, repair and service activities on heavy equipment. The employee uses considerable independent judgement in making decisions without the availability of supervision.

    Qualifications
    • Willingness to work hard and learn new skills
    • HET Journeyman Certificate
    • 5+ years industry experience
    • Valid Driver’s License
    • Air Brake Endorsed (Q)
    • Clean Driver’s Abstract (less than three convictions & less than 7 demerits)

    Physical Requirements
    • Must have the physical strength, stamina and coordination to complete the assigned duties
    • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs. independently; more than 50lbs. with assistance
    • Withstand working outside, on uneven ground, for long periods of time in different weather conditions
    • Be able to stand, walk, bend, crouch for long periods of time
    • Complete repetitive tasks for the duration of each shift

    Duties and Responsibilities
    Health, Safety and Environment
    o To be knowledgeable of and adhere to the company’s health, safety and environmental program. This includes Polices, Safe Work Practices, Procedures, Rules and applicable OH&S Legislation.
    o Participate in the HS&E program to ensure a safe work environment is maintained by identifying and controlling hazards, attending Health and Safety meetings, site inspections and report any infractions or deficiencies to your Supervisor.
    o Ensure the safety of yourself, co-workers and the public by conducting site safety hazard assessments and implement control measures, operating equipment as per manufacturer, company and regulatory requirements as they apply to your job.
    o To be a competent worker & operator by completing required training, review and understand your job/task hazards.
    o Actively participate to ensure the worksite meet environmental regulations as set forth by all levels of Government, Client requirements and Company Policies and Environmental Construction Operations (ECO) plans.
    Operations
    o Service, diagnose, repair and maintain On Road and Off Road equipment to ensure it is reliable and safe to operate as per manufacturers specifications
    o Perform routine maintenance checks and adjustments on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires and clutches; changes filters and oil and lubricates vehicles and equipment
    o Diagnose problems, disassemble units, repair or replace parts, and reassemble units.
    o Maintain or repair service attachments ie. Bucket teeth, cutting edges, winches, pto units, as well as a variety of other small units as required
    o Know and comply with DOT regulations
    o Complete and log Work Orders and material cost estimates in a timely manner in the system, file complete parts requests to supervisor for approval
    o Maintain neat and organized service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and equipment, using fleet maintenance software
    o Submit completed timesheets in E360 on a daily basis
    o Report abnormal repairs to Supervisor and record in fleet maintenance software
    o Road test vehicles and repaired equipment to ensure performance and repairs meet manufacturers specifications
    o Make emergency field repairs to a variety of specialized equipment
    o Operate tools and diagnostic equipment in a safe and effective manner as per manufacturers specifications
    o Maintain the service truck in a clean and organized manner
    o Ensure workstation is kept clean and safe of any hazards, assist with shop and grounds housekeeping when required
    o Maintain good interpersonal skills to discuss vehicle problems and solutions with other team members
    o Actively participate in the mentorship of apprentice mechanics.
    o May assist in the training of co-workers in mechanical repair techniques
    o Inspect and verify repairs made by apprentices or other unqualified personnel
    o Sign off on Work Orders/blue books for apprentices
    Human Resources
    o Have and promote a professional, positive image and attitude when working with the public, customers and co-workers.
    o Promote a team approach by maintaining an open dialogue with all employees and exchange information and ideas for improving the safety and production of the team.
    o Collaborate with other project teams and help with special initiatives, as required.
    o Ensure the training of workers in the safe and efficient operation of equipment, tools, worker tasks and company site safety program, including the creation of and training of Safe Work Practices and Safe Job Procedures
    o To be knowledgeable of, adhere to, and enforce the company’s policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Manual.
